Original email for context: I have a question regarding the weight loss. I know the average per day and per round. I’m on day 3 of the VLCD. I felt a bit sick this AM but after I had some fluids it passed. I’m doing a 40 day round. I have ~ 30 lbs to lose. I’m actually a nurse practitioner and we offer this protocol at our weight loss practice. I’ve not seen a patient that hasn’t lost weight daily in the first 3 VLCD. We only see them at 1-2 weeks so I’m unsure their daily loss prior to that weigh in. I lost 2 lbs yesterday and 0.1 today. Thoughts?
It’s true we don’t know what to expect when we haven’t experienced it before or know what others have experienced.
What sounds normal is your weight loss so far. If you lose 2 lbs in 1 day, it’s totally normal to have a very very low or even zero day the following day. As for the reason, consider that 2 lbs of actual fat loss if it were that, would include you burning 7,000 calories + the 500 calories you at in the day, meaning a total of 7,500 calories – obviously this isn’t possible in one day for a woman doing her regular thing (ie not running a marathon or something). So of course then some of this weight loss is water weight commonly lost at the beginning. So having a low day the next day as fluid levels fluctuate makes sense and is very common. Once you get through about a week, your average weight loss will typically be in the .5 lb/day – 1 lb/ day range for the first week.
What doesn’t sound too good is your other symptoms of feeling sick – commonly when this happens it can be electrolyte imbalance- please see my thread on this here:

I hope this helps!
